Justin Meldal-Johnsen is a Los Angeles-based musician and music producer. He first rose to prominence with Beck, playing many of the instrumental parts on Odelay, Mutations, and Midnite Vultures and holding down the bass chair in Beck’s live band. He subsequently became a member of Ima Robot, perhaps best known as the band for which Alex Ebert served as frontman before starting Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. From there, Meldal-Johnsen rejoined Beck’s backing group, pivoted to becoming the architect of M83’s live sound, and ultimately became an in-demand producer for groups such as Paramore, Wolf Alice, and School of Seven Bells. He is a noted exponent of short-scale bass guitars, with a signature model produced by Fender.
