Possibly the most famous European composer of his time, Josquin des Prez (1450?-1521) was born in France. While details of his early life are hazy, his later musical career took him through the courts of Milan and Rome before he settled in the employ of the Duke of Ferrara. Attracting the praise of numerous intellectuals such as Castiglione and Martin Luther, his music is a high point in Renaissance polyphony. Several hundred works have been attributed to him, some of them spurious ones that wished to take advantage of the composer’s fame.
