About John Vanderslice

John Vanderslice (born May 22, 1967) is an American alt/indie rock musician, songwriter, record producer, and recording engineer from Gainesville, FL. He is best known for his solo works and his analog recording studio, Tiny Telephone.

Vanderslice got his start in the music industry as a member of the experimental alt rock band MK Ultra. After the departure of guitarist John Tyner, Vanderslice carried over much of MK Ultra’s aesthetic into his solo career. Working hand in hand with engineer Scott Solter on many albums, Vanderslice experiments with his equipment to create new sonic experiences. That experimentation has carried over from his solo albums to his engineer work at Tiny Telephone.

Established in 1997, the San Francisco studio was initially used as a rehearsal space before being developed as a full-time, all-analog recording studio. Vanderslice ascribes to what he calls “sloppy hi-fi”, using analog instruments and recording equipment to produce a richer, more raw sound.

You need a little bit of violence in your art… I like to feel that there’s a fuck-you quality to the band, or to the record-making process, so that at any point things could get nasty.

Tiny Telephone has been a recording space for many of Vanderslice’s collaborators and friends, including Death Cab for Cutie, The Mountain Goats, The Magnetic Fields, tUnE-yArDs, and Spoon.
