Sir John Tavener (1944-2013) was born in London and gained musical fame at age 24 with his cantata The Whale. He composed Christian music from early on, but his conversion to Russian Orthodoxy in 1977 was reflected in the character of his work. He was knighted by the British crown in 2000. He is not to be confused with the much older British composer John Taverner.
