John Stanier

John Stanier is an American drummer best known for his work with the experimental rock band Battles, as well as his time with Helmet from 1989 – 1998. Stanier is also a member of rock supergroup Tomahawk.

Stanier is known for his precise movements, minimalist kit setup, and incredibly high-up Zildjian K ride cymbal.

In an interview with Modern Drummer, Stanier explains his set-up for Battles:

I didn’t want any cymbals but the hi-hats at first. Then I was like, “Okay, I’ll use one,” but I didn’t want it near me because I’d use it too much. So I set it high so I’d have to work to get to it. I wanted it to be significant; I use it as a marker. It’s like a master reset button when I go to the cymbal. Plus, it looks cool.
