Best known as the father of the great English poet who was his namesake, John Milton the Elder (1562-1647) was a financial worker who also wrote music and poetry in his spare time. Born to a Catholic family, he converted to Protestantism and was disowned by his father. Most of his music is religious in nature, and many poetry scholars describe his son’s verse as musical in nature.
