About John Kongos

John Theodore Kongos is a South African singer-songwriter, best known for his ‘70s hits “He’s Gonna Step On You Again” and “Tokoloshe Man”. The former song was famously covered by the Madchester group Happy Mondays in 1990, under the title “Step On”.

While his follow-up singles failed to chart, John continued to work as a record producer and theme music composer in the following decades, perhaps most notably handling programming of the Fairlight CMI synthesizer on Def Leppard’s Pyromania album in 1983.

John is not the only member of the Kongos family to see success. He has four sons, all of which have been members of the rock group Kongos since 2003. The band scored their biggest hit, “Come with Me Now”, in 2012.
