John Field (1782-1837) was an Irish pianist and composer. Born into a musical family in Dublin, he studied piano in London with Muzio Clementi and became renowned across Europe and respected by the likes of Chopin, Liszt, and Brahms. As the composer lay dying, an eyewitness said that a priest asked whether Field was a Calvinist. Field replied “Je suis claveciniste.” (“I am a harpsichordist.”)
