John Donne (1572–1631) was a prominent English metaphysical poet, as well as a theologian famous for his charming sermons. He was born into a recusant Roman Catholic family and grew up while the ideals of the Protestant Reformation were strong in England. He died at London in 1631. Many believe he had stomach cancer, but no sources have been able to confirm this.
