Johann Strauss the Elder (1804-1849) was born to Viennese innkeepers. After he was orphaned at age 12, his guardian apprenticed him to a bookbinder, but he found music more congenial. He quickly rose from a violinist to a wildly popular composer of waltzes, later branching out into galops, polkas, and quadrilles. He died of scarlet fever.
