Born to a musical family of Portuguese immigrants in Boston, Joe Raposo (1937-1989) became a staff songwriter on Sesame Street at the show’s inception in 1969 and wrote many of the program’s best-loved songs. He also did work for other TV shows, film, and Broadway, winning five Grammy and Emmy nominations plus one Oscar nomination. He died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
