Slayer was in tour and Hanneman couldn’t be with them, so band made the decision to play without Hanneman so they brought Gary Holt of Exodus who was also one of Hanneman’s best friends. After a longtime legacy of making Metal songs, Hanneman passed in May 2nd 2013. The official cause of death was announced as alcohol-related cirrhosis. And then Holt became Slayer’s new guitarist after Hanneman died.

James Hetfield of Metallica —

I’m grateful to have been in the same lifetime as Jeff, we share common ground. One being shy kids that found music to speak for us. Also grateful to have shared the stage at the ‘Big Four’ celebrations. With love and respect in our hearts, R.I.P., Jeff Hanneman.

Mille Petrozza of Kreator —

I can’t find the right words right now, this is the saddest day (Hanneman’s death) in music I have experienced so far. Jeff has influenced my playing, writing and the way I listen to music forever.

Alex Skolnick of Testament —

What separated Jeff from the rest of the metal pack was his rhythm technique, his songwriting, and that for which he will be most remembered—his riffs.
