A native of Iowa, Jean Seberg (1938-1979) was an unknown when she was cast in the lead role of Otto Preminger’s film Saint Joan. She was most famous in France for her French-language performance in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. A target of FBI smear campaigns due to her support of the Black Panther party, she suffered from drug abuse and mental instability in her later years and committed suicide in Paris.
