Born December 22nd, 1995, David “Jean Dawson” Sanders is a California-based alternative music artist. After releasing a handful of miscellaneous singles from 2013-2018 under various monikers like “Toshi,” “Donnie Dawson,” and “Daze,” Jean ultimately debuted under his current stage name with his 2019 EP Bad Sports. The project served as an impetus for Dawson’s signature dreamy pop-rock sound that was further refined with his 2020 breakout debut album Pixel Bath.
Pixel Bath made its rounds in online music circles, garnering the attention of a plethora of critics including a review by popular YouTube music critic Anthony Fantano. The album’s reach was amplified by star appearances like Matt Champion of boyband BROCKHAMPTON having a cameo in the music video for the album’s breakout single “Starface*” and Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky featuring on its second track, “Triple Double.”
Two years later, Dawson would go on to drop his sophomore album CHAOS NOW*. The 2022 project was yet another fusion of dream pop and rock, but with more elements of hip hop as well. Rappers Earl Sweatshirt and Isaiah Rashad featured on the album’s “BAD FRUIT*” and “KIDS EAT PILLS*” respectively. The album was well received by critics.
On his creative process, Jean Dawson said this in an interview with Zane Lowe:
I think I’m a product of indecision, and I love that… When I was 13, I was listening to Rick Ross and at the same time, Beach Fossils… Trying to bride that gap of understanding is something I’ve tried to do actively, but at the same time not having a science to it and not being afraid to fall on my face, so much so that if i’m tentative enough, and i care about this plant enough, i can water it the way it needs to be watered.
