About Jawbreaker

Jawbreaker is a punk rock band formed in 1986, by then NYU students Blake Schwarzenbach, Chris Bauermeister, and Adam Pfahler.

The band moved back to Los Angeles, in the members' home state of California, after university. This is where they recorded and released their debut album Unfun in 1990 before relocating to San Francisco the next year. They released their second album, Bivouac, in 1992.

Jawbreaker’s music contains incredibly personal anecdotes and feelings from lead singer/songwriter Blake Schwarzenbach’s own life. Often referenced as one of the most influential bands of the 90’s emo scene, they continued touring and recording until 1996, and released a total four studio albums.

In 2007, the band began working on a documentary with Tim Irwin, director of the Minutemen documentary: We Jam Econo. Don’t Break Down was released in 2017, ten years after being filmed, and over twenty years after the band’s breakup. That summer, Jawbreaker began playing together again, and were the headliner of Riot Fest in Chicago that year. In March 2018, they announced they were working on a fifth studio album, with Schwarzenbach telling Pitchfork that it might sound similar to 1992’s Bivoauc with “more band-like jams.”
