A prolific poet, Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) is better known today for his musical compositions. Born in Gloucester, he served in the British Army during World War I. After the war, he was active in London’s musical scene, but his mental condition steadily worsened until he was declared insane in 1922, eventually dying of tuberculosis in a mental hospital 15 years later. The source of his troubles has been variously traced to PTSD, a poison gas attack, possible syphilis, and bipolar disorder.
