Born to an academic family in Oxford, Humphrey Searle (1915-1982) started studying music at university and became one of England’s earliest proponents of serial music. He was also a music scholar who developed a system of cataloguing Franz Liszt’s music that is still in use. Besides his concert music and film scores, he also composed humorous pieces for the Hoffnung Music Festival under the pen name of Bruno Heinz Jaja.
