Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) was one of the most accomplished writer of songs in the Western classical tradition. While he made a great impression on German musical life as a vitriolic music critic, his composing career was characterized by bursts of great creativity followed by lengthy dry spells caused by depression. His career ended in 1897 when he slipped into insanity caused by syphilis, and he died in an asylum.
