Hugo Laurenz August Hofmann von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) was born to an upper-class family in Austria and showed interest in poetry from an early age. In 1900, he met Richard Strauss, the composer with whom he wrote the librettos for six operas including Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, and Arabella, the work for which von Hoffmannsthal is chiefly known today.
