Officially named the state balladeer of Alaska in 1994, Hobo Jim was the stage name of Jim Varsos (1952-2021), an Indiana native of Greek extraction who made the Last Frontier into his home. While he was active in Nashville’s country scene, many of his songs discuss specifically Alaskan topics related to the state’s fishing, mining, and lumber industries.
