Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) was a Polish avant-garde composer who advocated radical simplification in music during the post-Stalin Thaw. He shot from obscurity in the 1990s, when a recording of his Third Symphony made by Dawn Upshaw and David Zinman became a massive hit.
