Henry VIII of England (1491-1547) was crowned king in 1509. In his 38-year reign, he was known as a charismatic and volatile king who expanded the power of the throne and created the Church of England during a schism when the Catholic Church refused to annul one of his marriages in his fruitless quest to find a male heir.
The king was also known as a musician, playing lute, organ, and virginals. He also wrote a number of songs, the best known of which is “Pastime With Good Company.”
