Heino Kaski (1885-1957) was born into a musical family in Pielisjärvi (now Lieksa), Finland. He traveled extensively in Europe to study music, thanks to the sponsorship of Jean Sibelius. He enjoyed distinguished careers in teaching and composing, and won the Pro Finlandia medal. He happened to die on the same day as his mentor, Sibelius.
