‘'Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a 1998 musical is a musical about a fictional rock and roll band by the same name.’‘ It is a musical about Hedwig’s life and explores ideas of gender expression, love and political issues in East/West Germany. It does this by breaking the fourth wall many times.
The book was written by John Cameron Mitchell
and it draws upon his life. The character of Hedwig was inspired by a German divorced U.S. Army wife who was Mitchell’s family babysitter.

It is inspired by various music artists including glam-rock influences of David Bowie and John Lennon and early punk such as Iggy Pop and Lou Reed.
