Harvey Fuqua was an R&B and soul singer and songwriter who rose to prominence as the founder and lead singer of the Moonglows in the 1950s.
Fuqua mentored Marvin Gaye, taking him into his Moonglows and onto his record label, Harvey Records. In 1960, Fuqua sold Gaye’s contract to the up and coming Motown Records, headed by its founder, Berry Gordy. Like Gaye, Fuqua married into the Gordy family and became an important figure in Motown’s ascension to preeminence.
In 1982, Fuqua reunited with Gaye to produce his final studio album Midnight Love, helping to make “Sexual Healing” a runaway hit single as well as providing background vocals for the song.
