Great White was originally known as Dante Fox. Formed in Los Angeles in 1977, the band peaked with several albums during the mid-to-late 1980s. The band had much success with their platinum-selling records Once Bitten (1987) and …Twice Shy (1989), and those albums' singles “Rock Me” and “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” received considerable airplay through radio and MTV. They charted two Top 40 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “The Angel Song.” They continued to release new material into the 1990s.
The band shared their manager, Alan Niven, with fellow L.A. band, Guns N' Roses. Alccording to Niven, it was he who picked out “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”, as a cover tune for the band. (The track was written and originally performed by ex-Mott the Hoople member, Ian Hunter.)
This decision paid off big for Great White, as it became one of their biggest and most well-loved hits.
The band is still active today; there are actually two versions of the band – Great White and Jack Russell’s Great White. As of August 2008, Great White estimated they had already sold around eight million records worldwide.
