Born to a wealthy family in Philadelphia, Grace Kelly (1929-1982) pursued an acting career against the wishes of her family, performing in such films as High Noon, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief. She won an Oscar for her lead role in The Country Girl. She abruptly retired from acting to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco, never re-entering show business despite the entreaties of her frequent director Alfred Hitchcock. She died in a car accident caused by her suffering a stroke while driving.
