A classical pianist who inspired fanatical devotion among his fans, Glenn Gould (1932-1982) was also a composer, conductor, broadcaster, and music critic. As a pianist, he was particularly famed for his interpretations of Bach and 20th-century composers. He was also famous for his eccentric behavior, singing along to his own performances, wearing warm clothing even in hot weather, and retiring from live concerts at the age of 31 to make recordings exclusively. He died from complications resulting from a severe stroke.
