Girls' Generation, also known as SNSD (So Nyeo Shi Dae), is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. The group is composed of eight members: Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. Originally a nine-piece group, Jessica Jung later departed from the group in September of 2014.
One of the prominent South Korean figures and one of the most popular K-pop groups worldwide, Girls' Generation has earned numerous accolades and the honorific nickname “The Nation’s Girl Group” in their home country.
In 2007, the girl group released a self-titled Korean debut album. Though the album earned them a lot of popularity, it was not until 2009 that the group rose to fame with the single “Gee”.
In mid-2010, Girls' Generation signed with Nayutawave Records (which is now known as EMI Records Japan) in order to expand their talent to the Japanese music world. Their 2011 eponymous Japanese debut album peaked at the Japanese Oricon Albums Chart.
The group’s third Korean studio album, The Boys, was released in October of 2011 and became the best-selling album of the year in South Korea with sales of over 380,000 copies.
The group’s fourth Korean studio album that was released in 2013, I Got a Boy, was supported by its title track, “I Got a Boy”. The track increased the group’s popularity further by winning the Video of the Year award at the 2013 YouTube Music Awards.
After releasing Holiday Night in 2017, Girls' Generation went on a five year hiatus to focus on individual projects. However, the silence was broken when on May 16, 2022 SM Entertainment announced that the full group will make a highly-anticipated comeback to celebrate their fifteenth debut anniversary. Ultimately, their seventh full length album, FOREVER 1 featuring the title track of the same name seen its daylight on August 5, 2022.
