Born Virginia Katherine McMath, Ginger Rogers (1911-1995) started in vaudeville and first gained fame for her supporting roles in the musicals The Gold Diggers of 1933 and 42nd Street. She was best known for her partnership with Fred Astaire in eight musical films, including classics such as Top Hat, Swing TIme, and Shall We Dance. She was also a fine comic actress who gained distinction in Stage Door and won an Oscar for her work starring in the 1940 drama Kitty Foyle.
