George Smallwood is a Funk, soul artists. Born in Washington DC in the mid 1940s. From a young age George’s parents encouraged him to be involved with music, wether that was in his church choir, Glee club, or being a back-up singer in a street corner show, George made sure to pursue music and worked on honing his vocals.
But as he got to his 20s, the struggles of life caught up to him and his priorities changed, he had a wife and two children and they were his focus.
In 1968 he had a tragic accident, leading him to become irreversibly blind. Easily this would be the end of the world for some people, but not George Smallwood. He was determined to start a new life, and decided to return to music once again, as his parents always told him so.
Turning his attention to his new love of instruments and microphones he, and his brother Phillip, Sister Valda, and a few close friends formed the band “The sound of wood”. They performed their songs around the US, and recorded their songs in George’s basement, but unfortunately they never really picked up, and due to complications with the group they fell apart.
This was when “The Marshmellow band” was formed, consisting of George, George’s mailman “Tyrone Hooker” who was on bass and a friend by the name of David Moffet who was a composer and guitarist. The three went to Maryland in which they recorded their Debut album “Just 4 you” in 1981.
There isn’t much information on George Smallwood out there, but His message and purpose of making music was to “touch” people and make people feel his passion and soul and love. Which is definitely what we can hear and feel throughout his music.
