Walter E. “Furry” Lewis (6 March 1893 – 14 September 1981) was an American country blues singer, guitarist and songwriter. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi.
He started playing in saloons in his teens and his travels exposed him to artists like Bessie Smith, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Alger “Texas” Alexander and Frank Stokes.
Lewis didn’t like all the travel and he quit the road in 1922, taking a job as a street sweeper in Memphis, which he stayed with until he retired in 1966. But he didn’t retire from music. He remained active in the Memphis music scene until near his death. He’s remembered for his personal experience songs and his love of good times with friends.
