FRYA is a Zimbabwe singer and songwriter. She’s the definition of an artist that characterizes her sound as, the modern African woman: Versatile, forceful, and assertive.
Her love of singing began at an early age. Growing up, she was influenced by singers such as Adele, Rihanna, and Jhené Aiko, as well as her mother. FRYA, sometimes written FREYA, is a name derived from the goddess Freya in Norse mythology. She was presented as a goddess who loved music and was fearless in the pursuit of her desires. Something that is highly noticeable on Frya’s song. Her music career began when she shared a cover of an Adele song on Instagram, which grabbed the eye of the executive producer of SABC news, as Frya stated in a GQ interview:
I posted a cover of Adele’s song One and Only and an SABC producer messaged me about how well I sounded and asked to meet up and discuss music for a new show titled Side Dish they were working on at the time. We met and based on the story of the show I wrote the song, recorded it and they loved it; it was then used as the theme song for the show. After that, I decided to put out an E.P & other opportunities started opening up for me in the television space like Blood & Water.
FRYA’s reputation skyrocketed after her song was chosen as the theme song for the Netflix South African series Blood & Water. After being catapulted into the spotlight, she decided to take a leap of faith and release her debut album, Changes; a seamless demonstration of synergy compared to her previous work, a unique exhibition of poetic expertise in the Zimbabwe scene, and a presentation of her magnum opus at this stage of her career by spanning genres.
