A celebrated pianist, Franz Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) was a German of Polish descent who did not start studying music in earnest until his family moved to Berlin when he was 15. He was renowned for his interpretations of Chopin and for his music schools, which he opened in Berlin and New York. He also composed music in the Romantic vein, which underwent a reappraisal starting in the 1990s.
