Franz Waxman (1906-1967) started out by working in Germany’s film industry, but after a severe beating by Nazis, he left the country and became one of Hollywood’s most feted composers. He received 12 Academy Award nominations and two Oscars for his scores for Sunset Boulevard and A Place in the Sun.
