The child of a black dentist and a white music teacher, Florence Price (1887-1953) was born in Little Rock and educated at the New England School of Music, though at the behest of her mother, she initially told students she was Mexican to avoid prejudice against African-Americans. A figure in the Harlem Renaissance, she composed works in a traditional European vein but integrating elements of her own background. In 2009, a trove of works thought to have been lost was discovered, including two violin concertos and a fourth symphony.
