About Final Fantasy

In 1987, Japanese game developer Square was so threatened to close they decided to let Hironobu Sakaguchi create a fantasy RPG he planned. Trying to make something that abbreviated as “FF” and evoked how it was his last attempt in the video gaming industry, he named it Final Fantasy.

Contrasting with the ironic name, Final Fantasy was a hit, leading to a whole franchise with 14 mainline games and various spinoffs, with more than 115 million units sold.
