About Fenriz

Gylve Fenris Nagell (born Leif Nagell in Vinterbro, Viken on November 28, 1971), better known as Fenriz, is a Norwegian musician who is best known as a member of the extreme metal duo Darkthrone, alongside Nocturno Culto. He’s also a part-time music journalist and online radio host.

In 1986 Fenriz co-founded the death metal band Black Death with Ivar Enger and Anders Risberget. By two years later they had been joined by Ted Skjellum also known as Nocturno Culto and were renamed Darkthrone. After releasing a death metal album, they changed their style and became one of the pioneering bands in the Norwegian black metal scene.

Although primarily a drummer and lyricist, he has also played guitars, bass, and done vocals for Darkthrone and several other bands. Fenriz recorded all instruments on Darkthrone’s fourth and fifth full-length albums. Fenriz also founded several solo projects, including Isengard, and Neptune Towers. He’s also the studio drummer for the band Valhall.

The magazine Iron Fist noted Fenriz has a reputation as a “walking metal encyclopedia”. As stated by The Guardian, Fenriz “has an obsession with unearthing new music and promoting it with rabid enthusiasm” and “has long been a hero in the underground scene”.
