Before becoming Spain’s greatest writer of the 20th century, Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) seriously trained as a musician, an art form that frequently influenced his literary efforts. He fell in with the Generation of ‘27, a group of artists and writers seeking to blend international methods with Spanish subjects. He is revered as a poet in Spain, though non-Spaniards are likely to be familiar with his plays such as Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. He also continued his musical efforts, arranging folk songs into a successful collection. He was assassinated by a death squad for reasons that remain hotly debated.
