Fat Freddy’s Drop are a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand. Stylistically, they combine rootsy dub with soul-jazz and electro-funk. Their signature horn section is made up of a saxophone, a trumpet, and a trombone.
Some time in the late 1990’s, Fat Freddy’s Drop was founded by musicians already active in the Wellington scene, notably including vocalist Joe Dukie and producer DJ Fitchie. Their songs grow through jam sessions, and continue to do so during live performances. Live, they have an eighth member: MC Slave.
Fat Freddy’s Drop has become one of the most successful New Zealand bands. They won Best Album at the at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2005 with Based on a True Story. In 2016, they received the New Zealand Music Award for International Achievement.
Their latest release, Bays, has a more electronic feel than their previous albums. The LP’s title is an homage to their Wellington home base: Bays Studio.
