About Fancy (DEU)

Fancy is a famous German artist from the Italo-Disco & Euro-Disco scene of the 80s.

Among the successes of his career are several Top 10 and Top 20 hits (among others “Chinese Eyes” and “Come Inside” in the Billboard Dance Charts 1985 at #2 and “Check It Out” #8, or “Bolero” for weeks at #1 in Spain); over a hundred different productions for himself and other artists; key encounters with Jimmy Hendrix, Divine, the Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson, Siegfried & Roy and much more. Among music connoisseurs he is also often referred to as the “King of Discofox” – although he himself offers a broader spectrum of music. He himself accepts it. Nevertheless, his childhood and youth looked anything but shrill and colorful, as you know it from the 80s.

He was born in Munich on July 7, 1946. His father was a Spaniard, originally from Extremadura. His mother was from Munich. His upbringing was more conservative than open-minded – Fancy was to become a Capuchin monk. Until the age of 14 he had to go to a monastery – but his heart always beat for music. Secretly he listened to records by Tod Herold and learned to play the guitar, although this was actually strictly forbidden. After long discussions, his parents brought him back to Munich, where he graduated from a high school. Homesickness struck him hard – he even tried to break out of the monastery once.

After his schooling, he worked at music publishers and discos, performed in bars, cabarets, revues, pubs and vaudevilles with parody shows. At the age of 18 he already released his first single: “Ballhouse Slop”. “Completely without a hit” – as he said in an interview in 1988 – these parodies ran. He often performed as a comedian and clown and enjoyed it – all the more surprising was the sudden commercial success in 1984 with “Slice Me Nice”.
