Dexter Tiewon Gore Jr. (born September 6, 1993), better known as his stage name Famous Dex (formerly Black Migo Dex), is a rapper from Chicago, Illinois.
Although Dexter was born in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, Dexter spent most of his childhood in Englewood on the South Side of Chicago. He went to Robeson High School, the same school as fellow Chicago rapper Lil Durk. He is also the cousin of another fellow Chicago rapper, Lil Wop. Dexter started to pursue music after the death of his mother in September 2014, to which he also got a pink ribbon tattoo on his face in 2016 due to his mother dying from breast cancer.
Dexter would release his first mixtape in 2014, Never Saw This Coming, to which he continued his streak of releasing music and mixtapes throughout 2015 and 2016. His standout tape, Drippy, contained Dexter’s breakout single, “Drip from My Walk,” to which it gained immediate success. Thanks to this, on March 6, 2016, Famous Dex was announced as the first signee to Rich The Kid’s label, Rich Forever Music. From there, Dexter would continue to release a slew of mixtapes and singles, alongside collaborating with Rich and Jay Critch more often after getting signed to Rich Forever. That same year, it was announced that Dex would be signed to 300 Entertainment.
On April 6, 2018, Dexter released his debut studio album, Dex Meets Dexter, to which it was an immediate success. With songs such as “JAPAN” and “PICK IT UP” with A$AP Rocky both becoming commercial successes, the project saw it’s way up to the Billboard 200 at #12 and would later received the Gold certification by the RIAA two years later. That same year, Dexter would make an appearance on the remix version to “Welcome to the Party” with French Montana and Juicy J, alongside with Lil Pump and Diplo.
Although originally released back in 2015 for his Dexter’s Laboratory mixtape, in 2019, the song “Hoes Mad” would see a surge in popularity after it became a viral meme through social media. That same year, Dexter would noticeably slow down on releasing new music from his discography, as he was gearing up to release his sophomore studio album at the time.
On October 9, 2020, Dexter released his sophomore studio album, Diana, which unlike Dex Meets Dexter, was a commercial flop, as it failed to break the Billboard 200, only selling 4K copies within it’s first week.
From there, Dexter has seem to keep it steady with his music releases, despite going through with many personal struggles with substance abuse throughout his career which fans were concerned about. He has since re-signed to 300 Ent. for $5.6 million and continued to work with Rich and Jay Critch with their upcoming mixtape, Rich Forever 5, alongside other various artists.
