Born in Chicago in September 1986, Ezra Furman is everyone’s favourite bisexual, bipolar, Jewish, transgender singer songwriter (pronouns she/they).
She is possibly best known for soundtracking Netflix’s Sex Education.
Furman formed Ezra Furman and The Harpoons with bassist Job Mukkada in 2006 while studying at Tufts University. With The Harpoons, Furman released three albums: their 2007 debut, Banging Down the Doors; 2008’s Inside the Human Body; and Mysterious Power, their last album, released in 2011.
After touring Mysterious Power, Furman recorded her first solo album, 2012’s The Year of No Returning. Self-released and recorded in her attic, it was paid for thanks to a crowdfunding initiative on Kickstarter. The album was produced by Tim Sandusky, who would later go on to play saxophone in Furman’s second touring band, Ezra Furman and The Boy-Friends.
Backed by The Boy-Friends, Furman released Day of the Dog on Bar/None records in 2013. As with many of her projects, the album was met with critical acclaim, if limited exposure, though did help to establish her reputation in the UK.
2015’s Perpetual Motion People, was similarly well-received critically and also signalled something of an upturn in her commercial fortunes, peaking at #23 in the UK album chart.
In August 2016, she released a six-track EP, Big Fugitive Life, composed of previously unreleased songs.
On the 9th of February 2018, she released Transangelic Exodus, containing 13 tracks. The album didn’t have incredible commercial success, but she gained a lot of new followers after soundtracking Netflix’s “Sex Education” series.
2019’s [12 Nudes] was a rawer, punkier affair and was received generally positively by reviewers who liked the aggression and political engagement, with Pitchfork saying it was:
her most direct and brash album yet
While the NME called it:
an invigorating call to arms for a better world.
