A native of Rome, Ezio Pinza (1892-1957) became an acclaimed operatic bass singer despite never learning to read music. He sang the Italian repertoire in his native country and America. After his opera career ended, he smoothly transitioned into films and Broadway musicals, winning a Tony Award for his performance in the premiere of South Pacific.
