Daniel Desmond Amofah (May 12, 1990 – June 19, 2019), better known as his stage name Etika, was a popular internet personality, YouTuber, and Twitch streamer most well known for his viral reaction videos, particularly related to Super Smash Bros. trailers and other Nintendo content.
As a teenager, Etika took on the stage name “Iceman Etika” and he released his first and only mixtape, Written In Ice in 2007. He also occasionally participated in battle rap events hosted by Grind Time Now. Although he effectively abandoned his “Iceman” persona in 2010, Etika offered one final verse on the track “My Boiiii, Pt. 2” by Shofu Tha Beatdown in October 2017.
In 2019, Etika’s mental health was called into serious question after a series of erratic actions and choices. In a period of just 6 months, Etika was recorded punching a police officer, uploaded porn to his YouTube channel with over 500,000 subscribers to get it terminated, proclaimed himself as “the Antichrist” via Twitter, and most importantly, had multiple suicide scares that alarmed his friends, family, and fans. For these actions, Etika was admitted to a mental hospital, but was released one day later.
Etika was often accused of faking suicidal tendencies as a publicity stunt, though things took a serious turn following E3 2019. At midnight on June 20, 2019, Etika uploaded a 7-minute video titled “I’m sorry.” to his YouTube account, TR1Iceman, in which he extensively offers apologies to his friends and family while heavily alluding to suicide.
Shortly after uploading the video, Etika was announced by the NYPD as a missing person. His body was recovered from New York City’s East River on June 25, 2019; he was found to have jumped from the Manhattan Bridge.
