Eluveitie is a Swiss Folk Metal band formed in 2002 by frontman Chrigel Glanzmann. They are self-proclaimed as “the new wave of Folk Metal”, fusing Gothenburg style Melodic Death Metal with ancient Celtic folk music, as well as playing actual traditional instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy.
The band is named after the Helvetian celts who lived in what is now Switzerland during Roman times, with the word specifically deriving from a graffito inscription on a bowl dating to approximately 300 BCE reading “eluveite”. This inscription has been interpreted as an Etruscan form of the Celtic word “helvetios” and is thought to refer to a person of Helvetian lineage living in the city of Mantua.
