Eino Kettunen (May 13, 1894 – August 15, 1964) was a Finnish composer and lyricist, famous for his popular folk song, Ievan Polkka, which recalls the tale of a young woman by the name of ‘Ieva’ sneaking out to attend a local polka, only to meet and dance with a young man there.
Ievan Polkka was popular after World War II but was forgotten in the 1970s and 80s. It gained popularity again in the 1990s when the Finnish quartet ‘Loituma’ covered it, and again in the spring of 2006, when a website named leekspin.com was created, the website showing an endless flash animation loop of Orihime Inoue (from the anime series Bleach) spinning a leek while singing to the song.
Eino Kettunen's first song Ievan polkka released on Thu Jan 01 1970.
