Dream People are a band from Lisbon, Portugal. Their music is, above all, dialectic. If in some songs one finds lightness and love, one should also prepare to come in contact with pain and loneliness. Their songs mirror the lives of five young men growing in a beautiful yet poor country. A country lashed by economic crisis, where opportunity is scarce and being a musician is an act of courage or perhaps madness. Yet, since 2019, Dream People have been building their personal sonic space in the Portuguese music scene. Beginning with Soft Violence, their debut EP, the quintet presents us with a balance between synthetic atmospheres, resemblant of some strains of dream pop, and a component of melancholic shoegaze, in the ways of Lush. It was considered one of the best Portuguese records of 2020 (Mindies).
Dream People do not renounce to highlight the melodic sections and the colours of their songs. That’s where the depth of their work lies. This is quite prevalent in their new record, Almost Young, to be released early 2021. If Soft Violence presented us a band still finding their identity, here one finds a more mature group, that sings about real world issues: growing into adulthood and the fears of falling into a numbing routine and losing one’s essence in the process.
These are two records that introduce us to Dream People’s proposal: a band in a search for substance, for true emotion, for life without adornment. A band of dreamers that want to be real.
