Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) spent his entire working life under the Soviet regime. A highly prolific composer, he was perhaps the greatest symphonist of the 20th century, despite myriad difficulties with the Soviet government that bedeviled him throughout his career. His output includes 15 symphonies, an equal number of string quartets, six concertos, numerous film scores, and other music.
