DJ Quik is a legendary West Coast rapper/producer/DJ who was “Born and Raised in Compton” and known for his G-Funk productions inspired by artists such as George Clinton and Roger Troutman.
He hit the local scene with The Red Tape and was a member of the Penthouse Players Clique before releasing his debut album Quik is the Name in 1991, which achieved platinum status and features his highest-charting single to date, “Tonite.” As he was achieving success, Quik was involved in a beef with MC Eiht from Compton’s Most Wanted, and the two battled back and forth for years, culminating in Quik’s epic 1994 diss track “Dollaz + Sense.” As the years went on, Quik began to move away from gangsta rap themes and focus more on his musicality.
On top of his handful of solo albums, Quik has produced for a number of high-profile artists, including Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, JAY-Z, Raphael Saadiq, and many more. In addition to producing, he has also mixed or remixed songs for artists such as for Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson. He has also released collaborative projects with AMG (The Fixxers), Kurupt (BlaqKout), and Problem (Rosecrans)
